Recently, three of our Year 11 girls, Grace Kendall, Vanessa Morgan and Olivia-James McKeown, represented the College at the AHIGS Festival of Speech. The girls had to prepare a discussion on a current affairs issue and speak for over ten minutes exploring various aspects in a Q&A style presentation against experienced teams from Abbotsleigh, PLC Sydney and Kambala. Given the prompt “It begs the question”, the team of three developed a discussion based on Australia’s view on same-sex marriage, and how this may be linked to Australia’s perception of gender identity. The girls maintained a fluid and engaging discussion for the entire 14 minutes and their confidence and enthusiasm was impressive. The day served as excellent public speaking and debating practice and had the girls considering the effects of current affairs upon society.
