From Year 7 to Year 12 Stella Maris musicians mature into seasoned performers. Some of the opportunities for public performance include:
- Northern Beaches Eisteddfod
- City of Sydney Eisteddfod
- Community venues and events such as Manly Corso
- College Music Nights
- College liturgies
Senior Band is our most prestigious ensemble for musicians of approximately AMEB Grade 4 and above. Senior Band girls tackle challenging repertoire from contemporary to the classics, extending their musicality and ensemble performance skills. This band performs at College events, participates in eisteddfods and competitions and represents the College at community events. It also embarks on regional and international music tours, most recently to New York. An invitation to audition is offered to girls from Years 8 to 12 at the beginning of the school year. Year 7 girls may audition in Semester 2.
More challenging repertoire faces girls in Years 9 to 12 who are in Senior Band and want to make music in a Big Band Ensemble like the Stage Band. Musicians in Years 7 and 8 of exceptional ability may also be invited to join. The styles range from Classic Jazz to Funk and others in between. Stage Band girls perform at College functions, eisteddfods and other community events.
All Stella musicians are welcome to join the Concert Band. It is open to all abilities and there is no audition. In the Concert Band we play a range of repertoire aimed at developing ensemble music reading and performance skills as well as encouraging confident sight reading skills. The Concert Band performs at College events and Music evenings, participates in competitions and represents the College at various community events.
Flute, Clarinet and Saxophone Ensembles
Flute, Clarinet and Saxophone Ensembles are open to all our woodwind players. In these ensembles our wind players get the chance to improve their sight reading skills, intonation and technical skills in a relaxed environment. The small ensemble environment gives our musicians the chance to work together, tackling a range of repertoire aimed at extending technical and ensemble performance skills.
This ensemble is for all string players of all abilities. They perform a variety of musical genres and composers from Baroque to Beyoncé.
This smaller ensemble is for the advanced members of String Ensemble. Members perform everything from Guns n’ Roses, to Bach, Mozart and Piazzolla. This ensemble is highly sort after for performances both within the College and in the local community. The repertoire is challenging but very rewarding. The musicians develop small ensemble skills that are vital to performance excellence in the Higher School Certificate.
This ensemble is for acoustic or electric guitar players of all abilities. Our guitarists enjoy the mentorship of our talented guitar tutor and improve their technical and sight reading skills along the way. This group performs popular repertoire at many College and community events.
The Percussion Ensemble explores musical styles from Samba and Afro beats to Rock and everything in between. Percussion musicians experience a variety of percussion instruments such as Cajon, Drum Kit, Djembe Congas and Timpani, explore the art of improvisation and work on their ensemble skills.
All our junior musicians are welcome to join Junior Jazz and explore some Jazz funk and pop style.
Rock Band singers, guitarists, drummers and keyboard players perform loads of the latest Rock and Pop tunes that they choose themselves. There are different rock bands and they all perform at College music nights and community events.
The Uke Club is a group who meet for fun to perform a variety of styles on tiny guitars! We play lots of popular repertoire and everything current. No experience required, just lots of enthusiasm and commitment.
The Concert Choir is open to every girl from Year 7 to Year 12 who loves to sing. This choir rehearses and performs a variety of repertoire and has many performance experiences throughout the year.
Senior and Junior Vocal Ensembles
Members of the Concert Choir may be invited to participate in the Senior or Junior Vocal Ensembles. Junior Vocal Ensemble is a select group of singers in Years 7 and 8. Senior Vocal Ensemble is a select group of singers from Years 9 to 12. Ensembles compete in eisteddfods, sing at College events and Masses and represent the school on various occasions.
For any girl who loves to sing and dance! Past repertoire has included You Can’t Stop the Beat and Nicest Kids in Town from Hairspray.
Stella Girls are encouraged to learn an instrument with one of our private tutors or with their own tutor out of school hours. The College is able to source highly qualified tutors for any instrument. The current choices are listed below but change from year to year according to demand.
