“Twenty seconds before a race there’s absolute focus…You’ve got to find the
balance between being ready to go and being really at peace with yourself
as well.” – Cathy Freeman, Olympic runner
Participation in sport, especially team sport, is an integral part of learning at Stella Maris. Through sport girls learn patience, stamina, teamwork, collaboration, working towards personal goals and the importance of practise. They experience improved social relationships, hone their leadership skills, gain a healthy perspective and learn how to be gracious winners and losers.
Physical fitness is integral to our girls’ overall sense of wellbeing, their mental health and their confidence and, as research shows, it directly supports enhanced academic achievement.
Stella Girls are encouraged to participate in one of our many extra-curricular sports and to compete in numerous local competitions and we have a very high participation rate. The girls participate at every level of expertise – right from the absolute beginners to the champions – they’re all in it for the team experience, the physical challenge and the fun!

Talented Athletes Program
Girls accepted into the Talented Athletes Program participate in a two-day camp that involves training sessions and hearing from experts in different areas such as nutrition, strength and condition, injury prevention and motivation. The girls also have the opportunity to do fitness tests and participate in challenge activities such as the ropes course.
