Student Leadership

Stella Girls have a reputation as young leaders who graduate well equipped to make a positive difference in the world. The Leadership Program at Stella Maris runs from Years 7 to 12 and focuses on developing socially minded young women who embrace active citizenship. The personal growth that each opportunity fosters is not to be underestimated, especially in the areas of
- initiative and entrepreneurship
- confidence
- organisational skills
- interpersonal skills
- effective communication, especially public speaking
- integrity
- creativity
- community spirit
There are various opportunities for the girls to demonstrate and grow in their leadership skills during Years 7 to 11, some of which include
- Student Representative Council (SRC)
- fundraising for our local and Good Samaritan charities
- peer mentoring and tutoring
- the College Yearbook (Stellabration) committee
- representing the College at Open Evening and other College events
- volunteering for community service
Formal Elections
All our girls are offered training in leadership but there is a specific focus in Year 11 where the College Student Leadership democratic processes formally begin. The student body nominates and votes for their Year 12 representatives who are responsible for leading the SRC, running the College Assemblies, organising liturgies, initiating social justice campaigns, hosting events and House meetings, representing the College at major events and many other such responsibilities.
The SRC, whose members are formally elected by each Year group, is the conduit by which the girls can have an authentic role in the everyday running of the College. It is a core part of the Student Leadership Program.
Aside from the formal structures of leadership, we expect all our girls to be true leaders through their words and actions in the classroom and playground, their enthusiasm for engaging in College life, their support of other girls and staff and their sense of personal responsibility.

The College Captain

Molly Marr, College Captain 2017
At Stella, we live by vital Benedictine values including Peace and Justice, Community, Hospitality and Stewardship, which intertwine to form the foundation of our freedom to learn and grow. Every girl here has these qualities within them, and they are embraced here at Stella as a whole community – an extended family.
When I began my journey at Stella I was excited to see where my path would take me; the friends I would meet, the things I would learn and most importantly the person I would become. I realized that you can be anyone you want to be at high school; it is your journey on which to discover all kinds of people and become who you are.I like to think of our school as a ship, the SS Stella, where all the crew work together to propel themselves forward on the journey towards the HSC. We are a united front, propelled by the teachers and are in it for the long haul. We are sisters in this voyage through high school and we always support each other because in the end we grow as individuals by each other’s side.
We have musicians, singers, artists, geniuses, writers, dancers, mathematicians and girls who like sports; we have a full range of interests; however, that is what we do and not who we are. At Stella we emphasize and value the person you are, not your academic rank or how good you are at something. We value all your qualities as they all go to make up the girl you are. A ‘Stella Girl’. Part of the Stella family.
I want to welcome everyone to Stella Maris. I don’t want one person ever feeling like they are not welcome in our Good Samaritan family. And welcoming is something we actually do, not just something we talk about. Here we love, we laugh, we accept and we learn, not just the syllabus, but learn about others and how to build a strong and supportive community. At the end of the day, we are all part of the same family and that family gets bigger and bigger every year with more independent, strong-minded, determined and brave girls.
Welcome!
Molly
