“Recently Social Justice Prefect Lia Sison and I, were honoured to attend the Catholic Earthcare Day at Mt St Benedict College in Pennant Hills. Overall, the day was very enjoyable in the sense that I could immerse myself with individuals that have a similar role to me from all the Good Samaritan schools around Sydney. Through this experience, I was able to share with others the initiatives our school has put in place regarding how we care for our school environment (for example our soft plastic bins, our veggie gardens, our clothes bin and our recycling process) as well as hearing the initiatives undertaken by other Good Sam schools. I was also able to learn about potential initiatives that could be implemented at our school in order to consider our environmental impact. One initiative that Lia and myself were particularly interested in was aiming to create a ‘plastic free canteen’ or at least trying to minimise the amount of plastic that is used in our school canteen. The day was very informative. Lia and I have taken a significant amount out of it and will continue to look back on what we have learnt in order to consider the environmental aspects of Stella Maris College.” – Layla Gardner, Stewardship Prefect for 2020.
